Sunday School Overview

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

Visitors and new members wanting to learn more about the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and our church, in particular may find the Inquirers Class helpful.

MISSION FOCUS:
All of the monies collected during the Sunday School hour will go to an outreach mission that has been approved by our Session. The calendar year is divided up into trimesters, with each trimester being a new recipient. The recipient for our third trimester is Marion Medical Mission's Shallow Well Program. The program helps to build shallow wells in Malawi, and the cost of each well is only $350.

One and Two Year Olds—Room 203
This class has a short lesson every Sunday that utilizes songs, puppets, and hand motions. There is also a lot of repetition which this age group really appreciates. They hear stories about the life of Jesus, God's unending love for them, and how the church is a place where they can experience that love.

3, 4 & 5 Year Olds---Room 209
This class also uses Augsburg Fortress' Akaloo. Akaloo uses music, games, stories, and craft projects to teach children about God and the various stories in the Bible.

ROTATION WORKSHOP—Coordinator - Peggy Ley

For grades 1st - 5th, Rotation Workshop utilizes Multiple Intelligence Theory to allow kids to explore different Biblical stories and themes. All of the curriculum is part of the Agusburg Fortress' Akaloo.

6th & 7th Grades---Room 103
The Sixth and Seventh grade class will use BibleQuest curriculum. They will participate in a variety of different activities as they study each Bible story. There will be a strong focus on what the Bible story personally means to them and how they can continue to grow in their faith.

8th Grade Confirmation Class---Room 213
TConfirmation class is available to eighth graders. Participants study the Bible, Reformed theology, and the history of the Presbyterian Church. They are given the opportunity to decide to take on their baptismal vows for themselves, thereby becoming church members. The Confirmation class uses the curriculum We Believe! Processing Our Faith. Additionally, Confirmands are expected to attend our Fall Retreat as well as engage in memorization, weekly homework, and service projects.

Each Confirmand is accompanied on their journey with a Covenant Partner. This person serves as a mentor and guide to the Confirmand throughout the year.

High School Divisiontop

Senior Highs (Grades 9-12)---Room 303
The Senior highs will be using a curriculum written by members of Spring Valley. During the year, they will learn exactly what it means to be a member of this particular church. These lessons will be a part of a three year rotation, emphasing what it means to be a Presbyterian both at this church and in the world.

Adult Divisiontop

Adult Sunday School
Our goal is to provide an Adult Sunday School class for everyone. Whether you prefer intensive Bible Study or a lively discussion, there is a class here for you. If you have any questions about Adult Sunday School or what class might be for you, please contact Millason Dailey, Pastor of Christian Education.

Rally Day
This is usually held on the last Sunday in August to kick off the fall programming of the church. It is the Sunday when children move up to the next age level for Sunday School classes. It is a day of celebration with appreciation for those who have taught Sunday School the previous year, commissioning of returning and new teachers, fellowship for the church family by enjoying a meal together. It is also considered a "casual dress" day for church activities and signifies a close to the summer schedule.

 Children

Children in Worship
Children in Worship enables children in second grade to learn the basics of the worship service. Each spring a course is offered that introduces the hymnal, the Bible, the bulletin, the sacraments and other terminology associated with worship. Children bake communion bread as a part of this class and are invited to participate in this sacrament after baptism and the completion of this course. Bibles are given to all second graders at the end of the course.

Vacation Bible School
VBS is for children is held each summer for a week of in depth learning about people and stories of the Bible. Registration is open to church members for children ages 3 - rising 5th grade. Registration is open to non-members for children in rising 1st - 5 th grades. VBS includes chapel, Bible stories, music, art, recreation and snack.

 

 Resources

Library
A lending library for SVPC members is full of resources in print, video and CD's. Items may be loaned for 3 weeks or the length of a short term course. Curriculum which can be used again is also stored in the library.

 Youth

Camp Fellowship
Owned and operated by Trinity Presbytery, Camp Fellowship provides summer programs for elementary through high school students. A complete schedule for summer programs is available in March of each year. Camp Fellowship is also used for small groups and study retreats year-round.
