Angel
Tree
Working with God's Storehouse, our local
food pantry, our church sponsors a number of families
over the Christmas holiday through our Angel Tree program.
Some time after Thanksgiving, a Christmas Tree is put
up with the names of needy families in our area. Church
members adopt the different families and buy them presents.
We then deliver these presents to God's Storehouse for
distribution.
Blood Drive
SVPC holds two blood drives during the year, one in the Spring and one in December. This drive is open to the members of the community, as well as friends and members of the church.

Boy
Scouts and Venture Crew
SVPC has supported and maintained a strong relationship
with the Boy Scouts, troop 202, for over 20 years. The
troop is very active and has produced many young leaders
and Eagle Scouts in our community. For many years, the
scouts have been under the leadership of scout master
Don Gibson, who was awarded the Order of the Silver
Crescent by Governor Hodges in 2001. The troop is associated
with the Indian Waters Council which serves eight central
South Carolina counties and operates Camp Barstow, located
on Lake Murray. The Venture Crew 202 advisor is Bruce
Nuelken.
Boy
Scouts focus on camping and outdoor skills including
such activities as mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking,
canoeing, whitewater rafting, hiking, leadership development,
and rank and merit badge advancement. Venture Crew focus
is to assist/lead activities for the scout troop as
well as participate in advanced versions of scout activities
such as in biking, climbing and kayaking.

God's
Storehouse
This is a food pantry and clothing bank
serving Northeast Columbia, and is located at 1731 Risley
Road. This ministry had its beginnings at SVPC about
15 years ago. Our church members support God's Storehouse
by volunteering their time and by making donations of
food, clothing and household items. It is open the third
Saturday of each month from 9AM. to 12:00 noon for volunteers,
and open weekdays 9AM to 3PM to the public. Many
groups in the church volunteer at God's Storehouse on
a regular basis, but new volunteers are always welcome.
For more information, please contact Bryce Smith, Executive Director and a Spring Valley Presbyterian Member, at 691-1622.
Habitat
for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity has had a long and
diverse affiliation with Spring Valley Presbyterian
Church. SVPC was the first church in the area to "blitz build" a Habitat for Humanity house, and we continue to supportthis mission. We hammered with Millard Fuller and his daughter,
Faith Fuller, and even had a gig (building a house)
with the band, "Hootie and the Blowfish." Dewight Thomas,
who recently carried the Olympic torch during its run
through Columbia for the 2002 Olympics, may also hold
the SVPC honor for working on the greatest number of
homes; but every age, from Strikers, to the Junior and
Senior Highs up, have contributed.
A nail,
a hammer, one goal, with the spirit, where homes are
forged with faith and Christian love by members and
friends of the church. We are currently building the NE Coalition's second home. The structure for first home of the NE Habitat Coalition - a group of three churches from the NE: SVPC, 1st NE Baptist, and New Kirk Presbyterian - was built in the SVPC parking lot in November 2006, and later moved to its permanent site. For more information, or to get involved, please contact Lyle Hutter or Tom White. Link to the Central South Carolina Habitat Chapter: www.habitatcsc.org
Homelessness Action Group
SVPC is pleased to be associated with the Midlands Interfaith Homelessness Action Council. The council recently released its Blueprint to Address Homelessness, a comprehensive plan of 10 strategies designed to reduce homelessness and lessen its negative impact on the community. The Council bears the primary responsibility for improving coordination between and among local jurisdictions, providers, the business community, neighborhoods, local houses of worship, the homeless, and other stakeholders.

Soccer
SVPC provides a beautifully maintained classic
complex behind the church facilities for use by the
Columbia United FC. Columbia United FC is affiliated with the South Carolina Youth Soccer Association and offers soccer programs for boys and girls from 3 - 19 years of age. Through the efforts and contributions of parents and sponsors, the goal is to provide the best soccer experience possible for everyone involved. Link: www.columbiaunitedfc.com
Souper
Bowl of Caring
"Souper Bowl" is a nationwide ministry that
was started at SVPC by Dr. Brad Smith, a former
associate pastor, in 1990. It is a ministry that utilizes Super Bowl weekend to mobilize youth to fight hunger and poverty in their local communities. Youth from individual churches throughout the country
ask for donations of $1 from everyone as they leave
church that day. The Youth from each church collects the money, decides
what charity will receive the funds, and simply reports
the amount collected to the "Souper Bowl" here in Columbia
via the internet or the telephone. In 2008, almost 10 million
dollars was generated by 15,760 churches and groups.
Over 200 SVPC members give of their time to assist
the Souper Bowl of Caring in its ministry. This ministry is recognized by the General Assembly of
our church as the outstanding ecumenical ministry of
the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1995.

5K Road Race
The 5K
road race is held the morning of the church bazaar.
It attracts approximately 125 runners and nets upwards
of $2,000 for the bazaar-sponsored charities. The course,
USATK certified, is part of the Tour de Columbia
circuit of races and the Autumn Triple Crown. The race
typically involves 15-20 church members in various volunteer
roles including race director, finish line, course monitors
and fund raisers. Church members and the community also
support the race through sponsorships including financial
and prize awards.
The race
also includes the Bird Walk - an assortment of kiddie
runs which generally attract 30-40 children ranging
from 2 years to pre-teen. The Bird Walk is named in
memory of Scott "Bird" Nyland, the son of church member
Jim Nyland, who leads the kiddie races.

Bazaar
This annual affair is the largest fundraiser
of the year. Its purpose is to create fellowship among
members of the church and to raise money both for the
church and for missions outside the church. It takes
hundreds of hours of volunteer work and dedication.
The bazaar takes place in the fall, usually the third
Saturday of October from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. It
includes a combination of crafts, baked goods, frozen
foods, silent auction and white elephant sales. Children's

and lunch are both served. A road race and kiddie race
are run the morning of the bazaar.
