Souper Bowl of Caring

"Souper Bowl" is a nationwide ministry that was started at SVPC by Dr. Brad Smith, a former associate pastor, in 1990. It is a ministry that utilizes Super Bowl weekend to mobilize youth to fight hunger and poverty in their local communities. Youth from individual churches throughout the country ask for donations of $1 from everyone as they leave church that day. The Youth from each church collects the money, decides what charity will receive the funds, and simply reports the amount collected to the "Souper Bowl" here in Columbia via the internet or the telephone. In 2008, almost 10 million dollars was generated by 15,760 churches and groups.  Over 200 SVPC members give of their time to assist the Souper Bowl of Caring in its ministry.  This ministry is recognized by the General Assembly of our church as the outstanding ecumenical ministry of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1995.  www.souperbowl.org
